TJ Andrews has been caring for families and arranging funerals in Sydney and Melbourne since 1895. The founder, Thomas James Andrews, commenced the business in Newtown, initially using horse-drawn hearses prior to replacing horses with motor vehicles in 1923. A peculiar story about his son and successor, James Oswald, was that he once owned a boat on the harbor called, namely Swerdna, Andrews spelt backwards. It was a source of enjoyment and recreation by his family until it was claimed for the war effort. His daughter, Vera, married a Melbourne funeral director, Rob Allison, during the World War II. When serving in the military, Rob was able to get enough leave to make a return journey to Sydney by train. He proposed over the phone and they got married the next day. Vera’s son Clive, the fourth generation, now operates the firm. In this way, TJ Andrews continues to be a 100% Australian family owned business. Our arrangers  can meet you at your home to discuss any funeral arrangements.
